Ocho Rios is Jamaica’s cruise ship capital and is named, not for the literal translation of Eight Rivers, but for the many waterfalls nearby. The most famous of these falls is the Dunn’s River Falls where the mountain waters drop 600 feet into smooth limestone beds. Whether you swim in the basin of the falls or take the exciting climb, you’ll be sure to remember these falls. There are many excursions and activities in Ocho Rios besides the falls. You can sample jerk chicken, take hikes through rainforest terrain, check out old and new sugar cane plantations, or just hang out at the beach.
I have, personally, experienced the Mystic Mountain excursion out of Ocho Rios. You take a scenic lift ride up the mountain where you can see the jungle as well as the port. Once at the top of the mountain, you can go zip lining through the jungle with extremely friendly and entertaining staff. They keep you entertained while you wait for your turn to go down each line and make sure that you are safe getting on and off the lines. There is also a, gravity driven, bob sled-type roller coaster available which is a ton of fun. I could have ridden it all day! In addition to those adventures, there is a water slide into a beautiful infinity pool looking out over the port, a small museum of the history of Jamaica and a gift shop.
