Located closer to Cuba than to Miami, Key West is the southernmost island of the Florida Keys and the southernmost point of the continental U.S. Enjoy the laid back Caribbean vibe with a taste of the New Orleans high life in this fun-loving place with lots of history, charm and touristy entertainment. The cruise port is right on Mallory Square which is the home of the “Sunset Celebration” where hundreds of tourists arrive each night to view the sunset amidst arts and crafts exhibitors, street performers and food carts. Mallory Square is in the Old Town part of Key West where you can visit Duval Street, the Truman Annex and Fort Zachary Taylor.
Visit mile marker 0 on US highway 1 and stroll down the palm-lined streets of colorful bungalows, vintage saloons and tropical flowers where real estate titles date back to the Kings of Spain. Though the actual southernmost point of the continental U.S. is on privately owned land, one of the biggest attractions on the island is a concrete replica buoy brightly painted and labeled the “Southernmost Point of the Continental U.S.A.” While it may not technically be the southernmost point, its pretty darn close and is a great photo opportunity. Keep an eye out for the free-roaming chickens wandering the streets of Key West and make sure to drop by Margaritaville for some great food and company. Oh, and don’t you dare forget to get yourself some Key Lime Pie!
